Yaks primarily live in high-altitude regions of Asia, especially the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau, with wild populations found in parts of northern Tibet, western Qinghai, Ladakh (India), and occasionally in Nepal and surrounding areas. Domestic yaks have been widely distributed beyond their native range, including central Asia, the Caucasus, and even some introductions in North America, but wild populations remain concentrated in high alpine grasslands and alpine tundra between roughly 3,000 and 5,500 meters above sea level.
