Madagascar is an island country located in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa. It lies approximately 400 kilometers (about 250 miles) east of Mozambique, separated from the African mainland by the Mozambique Channel. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world and the second largest island country. Its geographic coordinates are roughly 20°S latitude and 47°E longitude. The capital city is Antananarivo, situated near the island's center in the central highlands. Madagascar is known for its unique biodiversity and distinct wildlife, much of which is native and found nowhere else on Earth.
