Michigan is a state located in the Great Lakes region of the Upper Midwestern United States. It consists of two peninsulas—the heavily forested Upper Peninsula and the more populated Lower Peninsula. Michigan shares land and water boundaries with Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and the Canadian province of Ontario. It borders four of the five Great Lakes: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie, and has the longest freshwater coastline of any U.S. state, measuring 3,288 miles. The state capital is Lansing, and its largest city is Detroit.
