Guy Fawkes was born in York, England, in 1570. He was likely born in a house on Stonegate, York, and was baptized at St Michael le Belfrey Church on April 16, 1570. There are claims that he may have been born in a small cottage at the back of what is now the Guy Fawkes Inn on High Petergate in York, which is close to the church where he was baptized. His father, Edward Fawkes, was a proctor and advocate of the consistory court at York, and his mother was Edith Blake. After his father's death, his mother remarried a Catholic, which influenced Guy Fawkes' conversion to Catholicism during his childhood in York.
