Why stationary fronts last

A stationary front forms when warm and cold air masses meet but neither is strong enough to replace the other, so the boundary between them stalls. Because the front is not moving much, the same areas can experience clouds, rain, or drizzle that persist for several days.

In contrast, cold and warm fronts generally move faster, so their associated precipitation and weather changes pass through a location more quickly. This is why stationary fronts, not cold or warm fronts, are associated with multi- day periods of unsettled weather.
