The video game series Resident Evil was created by Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara. The first Resident Evil game was released in 1996 by Capcom for the PlayStation. Mikami led the development of the original game, which was inspired by an earlier Capcom game called Sweet Home and was instrumental in defining the survival horror genre. The game's English title, Resident Evil, was chosen after the original Japanese title Biohazard faced trademark issues in the West. Shinji Mikami is widely credited as the main creative force behind the series' inception and success.
