The OSHA Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act applies to employers of workers who may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens through needlestick injuries or sharps-related exposures. This generally covers healthcare workers and others in occupational settings where there is a reasonable anticipation of skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM). Employers must implement safer medical devices and engineering controls, solicit employee input, maintain sharps injury logs, and provide training on these controls as part of OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens standards that the Act enhances. The Act applies broadly not only to healthcare settings but to any employer with workers at risk of needlestick or sharps injuries.
