Cats make biscuits on people—commonly known as kneading—because it is a comforting and instinctive behavior that originates from kittenhood. When kittens nurse, they knead their mother's belly to stimulate milk flow. As adults, cats continue to knead to show affection, mark their territory with scent glands in their paws, soothe themselves, and express contentment and relaxation. When a cat kneads on a person, it typically means the cat feels safe, bonded, and comfortable with that person. This behavior can also be a way for cats to seek attention or indicate that they are happy and relaxed in the person's presence. Some cats knead more strongly or more frequently because it releases feel-good hormones and helps them feel secure and calm. Cats may also knead on people they are especially bonded to, such as those who feed or care for them regularly.
