Dandruff is caused by a variety of factors, often related to scalp conditions that lead to an accelerated shedding of skin cells. A main contributor is the overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia, which feeds on the oils produced by the scalp. This overgrowth can irritate the scalp, leading to excess skin cell production and flakes. Other causes include dry skin, oily scalp, not shampooing enough or shampooing too much, sensitivity or allergic reactions to hair products, and environmental factors like cold weather or stress. Moreover, individual susceptibility and certain health conditions can increase the likelihood of dandruff. The flakes seen with dandruff result from the scalp shedding these accumulated dead skin cells.
In essence, having so much dandruff may be due to a combination of excess scalp oil, fungal proliferation, skin irritation, or improper hair care routines.
