People kill themselves for many complex and varied reasons, often involving overwhelming emotional or psychological pain. Common reasons include severe depression, feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or being a burden to others. Other factors include traumatic experiences, major life changes like loss of loved ones or relationships, mental health disorders such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, substance abuse, and feeling trapped without hope for improvement. Some people attempt suicide impulsively during moments of intense stress, while others may do so as a way to escape unbearable physical or emotional pain. Additionally, social isolation, financial problems, discrimination, and a history of trauma or abuse can contribute to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. In some cases, people may also be expressing a cry for help or responding to auditory hallucinations in psychosis. There is no single cause, but suicide often results from a combination of these factors leading to a sense of despair and a belief that suicide is the only way out.
