Orange Shirt Day gets its name and significance from the story of Phyllis Jack Webstad, a residential school survivor. On her first day at residential school, she wore a bright orange shirt gifted by her grandmother, but the staff took it away from her, and it was never returned. The orange shirt has since become a symbol of the broader experience of Indigenous children who were stripped of their identities and endured hardship and loss in the residential school system. Wearing orange on this day represents solidarity with survivors and acknowledges the many losses experienced by Indigenous communities due to these schools. The day promotes awareness, healing, and reconciliation, with the message "Every Child Matters." This day is observed on September 30th, marking the time when Indigenous children were historically taken to residential schools.
