The Moon appears red today because it is near the red supergiant star Antares in the constellation Scorpius on August 30, 2025, not because of a lunar eclipse or a phenomenon like a Blood Moon. The Moon is currently in its Waxing Crescent phase with about 42% illumination, and the red hue seen today is influenced by its proximity to the bright red star Antares, rather than an atmospheric event like a lunar eclipse, which typically causes the Moon to turn red during total lunar eclipses when Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon. The next total lunar eclipse with a red Moon (Blood Moon) is expected on September 7-8, 2025.

A Blood Moon, where the Moon turns red due to Earth’s atmosphere filtering sunlight during a total lunar eclipse, is not occurring today but coming about a week later. The red color during these eclipses is caused by Rayleigh scattering, which filters out blue and violet wavelengths leaving the red light to reach and illuminate the Moon.

Therefore, the reason the Moon is red today is its visual proximity to the red star Antares rather than an eclipse event.
