The Spectacular Spider-Man was cancelled mainly due to legal and corporate issues following Disney's acquisition of Marvel in 2009. Sony, which originally produced the show, lost the television rights to Spider-Man after Marvel (now owned by Disney) regained control over the character's animation rights. This led to no company having the legal ability to produce further seasons, effectively halting the series after just two seasons. Plans for new episodes and storylines were stopped despite strong fan demand and critical acclaim. Additionally, the introduction of a new series, Ultimate Spider-Man, under Disney's Marvel Animation further sealed the fate of The Spectacular Spider-Man, as Disney wanted to consolidate its Marvel brand and develop its own animated series based on the Spider-Man character.
