The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is a papal basilica in Rome, founded in 432 CE by order of Pope Sixtus III, situated on the Esquiline Hill. It is the largest church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Rome and one of the four papal basilicas of the city. The basilica is known for its rich history, stunning Roman mosaics, including scenes from the infancy of Jesus, and its gilded ceiling made with gold believed to be the first brought from the Americas. According to legend, the basilica was founded following a miraculous snowfall in August during the summer, a tradition commemorated annually by dropping white flower petals from the ceiling. It houses what is believed to be a relic of the manger of the infant Jesus and notable artworks including the first inanimate crib in history. The basilica also contains tombs of seven popes and is a major site for Christian pilgrimage. It has architectural elements ranging from early Christian to Baroque, reflecting its many restorations and additions over centuries.
