The Mediterranean Sea has an average depth of about 1,500 meters (4,900 feet). Its deepest point is the Calypso Deep in the Ionian Sea, which reaches a maximum depth of approximately 5,200 to 5,267 meters (about 17,100 to 17,280 feet). The Calypso Deep lies southwest of Pylos, Greece, and has been confirmed by multiple crewed and sensor-based measurements to be the deepest spot in the Mediterranean Sea.
