Mary was born on December 8, 1542, at Linlithgow Palace, Scotland, and became queen at just six days old after the premature death of her father, James V of Scotland. Her mother, Mary of Guise, acted as regent during her childhood. As a child, Mary was sent to France and raised at the French court to secure a powerful Catholic alliance.

Reign & Marriages

Mary married the French dauphin, Francis, who became King Francis II. After his early death, she returned to Scotland in 1561 as a widow. Her reign in Scotland was marked by religious conflict—she was a Catholic queen in a now officially Protestant country—and turbulent noble politics. Mary married twice more: Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley (whose murder contributed to her downfall) and James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, whose controversial marriage to Mary triggered rebellion among the Scottish nobility.

Downfall, Imprisonment, & Execution

Forced to abdicate in favor of her infant son, James VI, Mary fled to England in 1568 seeking protection from her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Instead, Mary was imprisoned for 19 years. As a legitimate Catholic heir to the English throne, she was seen as a threat and became embroiled in plots against Elizabeth. Ultimately, Mary was executed for treason at Fotheringhay Castle on February 8, 1587, at the age of 44.
