A PWI (Predominantly White Institution) is a college or university where 50% or more of the students are white. The US Department of Education defines a PWI as a university that has 50% or more enrollment from White students but it is also used to refer to any University that is deemed “historically white” . PWIs are often contrasted with HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), which were established prior to 1964 and whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans. The choice between attending an HBCU or a PWI can be difficult for some students, as HBCUs often have less funding than PWIs. Black students attending PWIs may feel uncomfortable due to the lack of representation and community, and may feel isolated. Inclusive teaching practices can help create a more welcoming environment for students at PWIs.
