Stuart Scott had appendiceal cancer.

Diagnosis

This rare cancer originated in his appendix and was discovered in 2007 during an emergency appendectomy prompted by severe stomach pain. He underwent additional surgery to remove part of his colon and nearby lymph nodes, followed by preventive chemotherapy.

Disease Progression

The cancer went into remission but returned in 2011 and again in 2013, spreading to his abdomen. Scott received treatments including Fluorouracil (5-FU) chemotherapy, radiation, and multiple surgeries, yet it proved aggressive and fatal.

Rarity and Impact

Appendiceal cancer affects the appendix's epithelial cells, often mimicking other gastrointestinal issues, with incidence rates rising due to better detection. Scott passed away on January 4, 2015, at age 49 after a seven-year battle.
