Anne Frank lived first in Germany and later in the Netherlands, most famously in a hidden annex in Amsterdam during World War II.

Early life in Germany

Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 1929, where her family lived at several addresses in the city before fleeing Nazi persecution. As antisemitism and danger increased under Nazi rule, her parents decided to leave Germany in 1933.

Home in Amsterdam

From 1934 until 1942, Anne lived with her family in an apartment at Merwedeplein 37 in the Rivierenbuurt district of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. This neighborhood housed many Jewish refugees who had escaped from Germany.

The Secret Annex

In July 1942, the Frank family went into hiding in a concealed annex at Prinsengracht 263, the building where her father’s company was located in central Amsterdam. Anne, her family, and four other people hid there for just over two years until their arrest in August 1944.

After arrest

After they were discovered, Anne was deported first to Westerbork transit camp and then to Auschwitz and finally Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where she died in early 1945. Her father, Otto Frank, was the only immediate family member to survive and later returned to Amsterdam.
