You may be getting cramps after your period due to several possible reasons. This post-period cramping, sometimes called secondary dysmenorrhea, can be caused by conditions such as endometriosis (where uterine-like tissue grows outside the uterus), adenomyosis (where uterine tissue grows into the muscle wall of the uterus), uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, or infections like pelvic inflammatory disease. Hormonal changes after your period, specifically the drop in progesterone, can also cause uterine contractions that lead to cramping. Additionally, your uterus can continue to contract as it returns to its normal size after menstruation, which may cause lingering cramps. Persistent or severe cramps should be evaluated by a healthcare provider to rule out underlying conditions.
