Koalas are endangered primarily due to habitat loss and fragmentation, severe bushfires, diseases, and climate change. Bushfires, intensified by climate change, have burned vast tracts of their habitat, directly killing many koalas. Additionally, diseases such as chlamydia, which causes blindness and infertility, are widespread and hard to treat in koala populations. Climate change also reduces the nutritional quality of their eucalyptus leaves and increases heat stress, making survival harder. Road accidents and attacks by domestic dogs further contribute to their decline. These combined threats have led governments like Australia's to officially list koalas as endangered in several regions to trigger conservation efforts.
