The Bathurst 1000 is called so because it is a 1000-kilometer touring car race held at the Mount Panorama Circuit near the city of Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. Originally, the race began as a 500-mile event known as the Armstrong 500, held at Phillip Island starting in 1960. In 1963, the race moved to Bathurst, maintaining the 500-mile distance and becoming known as the Bathurst 500. In 1973, the race was extended to 1000 kilometers, adopting the name Bathurst 1000. The name reflects both the location of the race in Bathurst and the race distance of 1000 kilometers, which was chosen as the metric equivalent fitting for an endurance race in Australia after the country adopted the metric system.
