Gough Whitlam was sacked as Prime Minister of Australia on November 11, 1975, by Governor-General Sir John Kerr due to a parliamentary deadlock over government funding. The opposition, led by Malcolm Fraser, blocked the government's supply or money bills in the Senate, refusing to allow the budget to pass. This created a financial crisis because the government could not secure the funds needed to operate. Whitlam refused to call an early election to resolve the deadlock. After seeking legal advice confirming his constitutional reserve powers, Kerr dismissed Whitlam, appointed Fraser as caretaker Prime Minister with the condition that he secure supply and call a double dissolution election. This marked the only time in Australian history a sitting Prime Minister was dismissed by the Governor-General despite having majority support in the House of Representatives.
