There are several ways to get oil out of clothes, including:
-
Liquid dishwashing detergent: Apply enough liquid dishwashing detergent to saturate the oil stain and gently massage it completely into the stain. Allow a little time for the dish detergent to break up all of the oil, then rinse the stain completely with warm water. If your clothing is white and bleach-safe, wash in the hottest water recommended on the care label using a good laundry detergent and ⅓ cup Clorox® Disinfecting Bleach. If the fabric has color, or is white and includes any spandex, wash it in the warmest water recommended using detergent and Clorox 2® for Colors.
-
Vinegar: Vinegar is an ally and a time-saver when it comes to removing oil from clothes, thanks to its acetic acid that cuts through grease. Vinegar also helps to neutralize any unpleasant odors that may be left behind.
-
Baking soda: Sprinkle baking soda on the affected fabric and allow it to sit for 24 hours. After a day, shake off the baking soda and wash the garment as usual.
-
Dish soap: Scrape and blot liquid dish soap into the stain and let sit for 10 minutes. Soak in warm or hot water for at least 30 minutes, then place in the washing machine and wash with a concentrated laundry soap like Swash in the warmest water recommended on your clothings care tag. Line dry the garment.
-
Tide Liquid Laundry Detergent: Tide Liquid Laundry Detergent, clear dish soaps, white vinegar, and warm water can all work well at breaking down and lifting even the most stubborn oil stains.
Its important to act as quickly as possible when dealing with oil stains, as they can be more difficult to remove once they set in. Always check the care label on your clothing before attempting to remove a stain, and avoid bleaching wool, silk, leather, mohair, and spandex.
