Shelley Duvall, an American actress and producer, decided to step away from Hollywood in 2002 and retire in Central Texas after acting in more than 20 movies and producing several TV shows. She disappeared from Hollywood for 20 years due to her family. Following the release of The Shining in 1980, Duvall acted until 2002, and her absence from on-screen acting for about 20 years ended in 2023 when she returned to act in an upcoming horror film titled The Forest Hills. During the filming of The Shining, Duvall fell victim to some unfortunate and unnecessary experiences that negatively affected her mental health. The Hollywood Reporter quoted her process of getting into character and how her preparation led her to "listen to sad songs. Or you just think about something very sad in your life or how much you miss your family or friends. But after a while, your body rebels. It says: ‘Stop doing this to me. I don’t want to cry every day.’ And sometimes just that thought alone would make me cry". The abuse by Stanley Kubrick was so severe that it allowed him to get the desired terrified and completely unraveled woman he needed to make The Shining. In 2016, Duvall was contacted by a Dr. Phil producer, and she submitted to the interview without her agents knowledge. The interview was disturbing, and she babbled free-associative nonsense and disclosed paranoid fantasies.
