Honour crime is a form of violence, usually murder, committed by male family members against female family members who are perceived to have brought dishonor upon the family. Women can be targeted by their families for a variety of reasons, including refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, being the victim of a sexual assault, seeking a divorce, or committing adultery. Perpetrators of honour crimes often do not face negative stigma within their communities, as their behavior is seen as justified. Honour crimes deprive women and girls around the world of their basic human rights, and extreme cases end in death. Worldwide, an estimated 5,000 women and girls are murdered every year in honour killings. Honour crimes have occurred in the United States and are a growing concern. Honour-based abuse is a crime or incident committed to protect or defend the honour of a family or community. If someones family or community thinks they have brought dishonour, they may be at risk of honour-based abuse. Individuals who have suffered or fear that they will suffer an honour crime in their home country may be eligible for asylum.
