The Metropolitan Opera, commonly known as the Met, is an American opera company based in New York City. It is currently resident at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center, situated on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The company is operated by the non-profit Metropolitan Opera Association, with Peter Gelb as general manager. The Met has given the U.S. premieres of some of the most important operas in the repertory. Each season, the Met stages more than 200 opera performances in New York, and more than 800,000 people attend the performances in the opera house during the season. The Met also offers a range of media offerings, including Metropolitan Opera Radio on SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Met Opera on Demand (formerly called Met Player), and The Met: Live in HD, which is a series of live movie theater transmissions.
