Sickle cell trait (SCT) is a genetic condition that occurs when a person inherits one sickle cell gene and one normal gene from their parents. People with SCT usually do not have any of the symptoms of sickle cell disease (SCD), but they can pass the trait on to their children. SCT is not a disease, and people with SCT live a normal life span with no medical problems related to SCT. However, under extreme conditions such as severe dehydration and high-intensity physical activity, people with SCT can experience serious health issues, including sudden death. SCT affects people of any race or background, but it is more common in African Americans, with 1 in 12 African Americans having SCT. A simple blood test can be done to find out if someone has SCT, and testing is available at most hospitals or medical centers.
