According to the search results, approximately 80-90% of what we perceive as "taste" actually comes from our sense of smell. The remaining 10-20% of taste comes from the five types of receptors on our tongues that detect sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami (savory) flavors. Without our sense of smell, our sense of taste is limited to only these five distinct sensations. When volunteers wore nose plugs, their sense of taste was less accurate and less intense than when they tasted the food without the nose plugs, indicating that smell does make a difference in our perception of taste.
